Contractor to perform inspections in area of 54-inch sewer main failure

DC Water in coordination with the District Department of Transportation will perform emergency work on Suitland Parkway Southeast near Stanton Road starting tonight as early as 7 p.m. and ending tomorrow morning at 5 a.m. Crews will be inspecting additional sections of a 54-inch stormwater main that failed last month.

In order to conduct the work, traffic in this area will be reduced from two lanes to one in each direction on Suitland Parkway. Motorists are advised to use caution, reduce speeds, and follow the direction of flaggers through the construction zone.

Repairs have been ongoing since the stormwater main failed in early March; however, further inspections are needed to determine if other sections of the pipe are compromised. The break last month created a sinkhole 15-feet wide and 20 feet deep on Suitland Parkway between Firth Sterling Avenue and Stanton Road.

Work is expected to be completed, and the lane closures lifted prior to the start of the morning rush hour Thursday morning.

For additional questions or concerns call our 24/7 Emergency Command Center at 202-612-3400.
